On Tuesday, September 27th, we were invited to return to Heritage Intermediate School to attend an assembly about Rachel’s Challenge. There were assemblies for each grade of students as well as an evening assembly for the parents to attend. The national organization of Rachel’s Challenge had a representative come out and speak at the assembly hosted by the school. Students, teachers, and parents filled the multi-purpose room, which showcased the Rachel’s Challenge mural we had designed and installed over the past summer.

The event speaker shared the history and story of Rachel Joy Scott whom Rachel’s Challenge is based on. Videos, photos, and testimonies of Rachel’s life and influence not only reminded adults and taught children of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, but it compelled everyone to take on Rachel’s Challenge, which she left behind in her diaries and essays. Her challenge is simple: start a chain reaction of kindness.

They shared of her life, her dreams, and her influences. Among some of her influences shared in the presentation were Anne Frank and Martin Luther King Jr. who can both be found on the mural we created for the school.

At the end of the presentation, everyone looked back at the lit mural and had a visual reminder of Rachel and her challenge to dream big, to be an influence in this world, and to start a chain reaction of kindness.

It was truly an amazing project to be a part of, and we are honored by the opportunity to commemorate Rachel and her challenge. We would like to thank Laura Rowland, the principal of Heritage Intermediate School, for giving us the opportunity and freedom to create a truly meaningful mural for the school, the children, and the community.
